London Exhibitions Not To Miss In September 2024

Our monthly roundup of our favourite London based exhibitions this September, as curated by the BRUSHWRK team…

EXORCISM: INSIDE OUT

Until 7th September

Richard Saltoun Gallery

"Richard Saltoun Gallery is pleased to announce Exorcism: Inside Out, a solo exhibition by pioneering LA-based, London-born Feminist Surrealist, Penny SLINGER (b. 1947). Spanning original photo-collage, print and video work, the exhibition coincides with the publication of Slinger's iconic book, An Exorcism: A Photo Romance (Fulgur Press, 21 June 2024). After the original An Exorcism was published in 1977, the artist created this extended version, which was nonetheless withheld from being published in the UK after her other collage book, Mountain Ecstasy (Dragon’s Dream, March 1978, Holland), was seized and burned by British customs for being deemed pornographic.

After nearly 50 years, Slinger’s groundbreaking project can finally be revealed to audiences in the UK and beyond. In celebration of this extraordinary moment, Exorcism: Inside Out will be one of the most ambitious exhibitions ever realised at Richard Saltoun Gallery. Inspired by the artist’s project for Dior’s haute couture fashion show in Paris in 2019, it is designed as an all-immersive audio-visual environment, with the entire gallery wrapped in images from the original An Exorcism series and presenting a spectacular evolution of the artist’s vision"

Peter Kennard: Archive of Dissent

Until 19th January 2025

Whitechapel Gallery

"Peter Kennard (b. 1949, UK) is a London-based artist and activist, and Emeritus Professor of Political Art at the Royal College of Art.

Archive of Dissent marks one of the most extensive displays of Kennard’s work to date and has been specially conceived for Whitechapel Gallery. Taking over three galleries within the former Whitechapel Library space, the exhibition brings together work from across the artist’s prolific and influential five-decade career, offering an important repository of social and political history while illuminating an artistic practice that has continuously countered and protested the status quo"

BobCat Gallery

Putney Exchange

Ongoing

"BobCat Gallery will return to Putney this summer, opening a new store in Putney Exchange Shopping Centre from 1st August.

Focused on affordable, original art, the gallery will showcase a changing selection of artists each month, including artists from across the local area.

Since 2021, BobCat Gallery has hosted pop-up exhibitions across London as well as offering consultancy for worldwide clients. Following a successful pop-up shop at the Centre in 2022, BobCat Gallery is now delighted to offer an even greater range of original and handmade limited edition artwork from a much larger space"

ECLIPSE

Until 8th December

Lumen Studios

"Captivate the senses, connect with your surroundings, and challenge reality as you delve into ECLIPSE, NONOTAK’s solo London debut presented by Lumen Studios. This evocative audio-visual experience explores the power and impact of light on visual perception when combined with space and sound. Light will be sculpted and expressed in various forms through three curated installations, HIGHWAY, DUAL, and HIDDEN SHADOWS"

Firelei Báez: Sueño de la Madrugada

Until 8th September

South London Gallery

"Sueño de la Madrugada (A Midnight’s Dream) is Firelei Báez’s first solo exhibition in the UK. Known for her striking paintings, she also makes drawings, installations, and sculptures. Báez takes over the South London Gallery with new immersive installations and large abstract paintings. She uses rich colours, elements from nature, sound and light to reflect on complex colonial histories.

The exhibition is a journey through vibrant spaces where ecology, power, and resistance interact."

Until 5th January 2025

V&A South Kensington

"An unparalleled selection of the world's leading photographers, telling the story of modern and contemporary photography. Discover iconic images across subjects such as fashion, celebrity, reportage and the male body"
